Keep The Exterior of Your Property Safe

Having many amenities is a plus for any guest, but as an owner, you have to keep in mind that some of the amenities you have could be hazardous or be a risk if not used properly or if it’s not up to code. Prevent any injury or accident following these safety tips.

1. Add Signage in Hazardous Areas

Just like a hotel, your short-term vacation rental should have clear signage in possible hazardous areas like pools or any fire-related spots (grills, fire pits). Provide instructions on how to use those amenities that your guests might not be used to handling, so they can use them safely.

2. Increase Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting is a safe bet to keep your guests safe at night. Your guests are not used to walking around your rental, so that’s where outdoor lighting is an easy way to keep them safe from falling or hurting themselves. Illuminate any potential hazards and any walkways as well.

3. Do Some Deck Inspection

Check below your deck if possible and look for any bolts out of place, rusty nails, or anything that’s not up to code for a deck. Stair rails or guardrails have to have a certain height as well, which should be up to code and you can get more information from your building inspector or in the municipality.

4. Get Your Pool or Hot Tub Secured

Since these items are one of the most popular for guests, they should be secured right away. There are some regulations that go with pools and hot tubs like lockable covers to prevent any issues with children.

5. Secure Your Fire Pit and Grill

Besides having instructions for using those amenities, you need to keep a fire extinguisher close and make sure it’s up to date as well.

A good tip for a fire pit is to have a water bucket so guests can extinguish the fire, in case they are leaving and new guests are coming the same day.
